Empowering storytelling for nursery children using pioneering techniques by Vivian Paley. ![]() TAG has developed expertise in delivering storytelling and story-acting with early years. TAG's project, called Dragonfly is based on the work of Vivian Palely an award winning and hugely inspiring kindergarten teacher. Dragonfly focuses on empowering children to create and share their stories, enhancing the community of the nursery. confidence, freedom of expression & individuality This work is about putting play, storytelling and story-acting into the heart of the nursery community. Allowing each individual child space to be listened to, heard and acknowledged. Drama, play and stories are the essential tools to examining the social and emotional worlds that are the foundations of literacy and learning. This project equips child and adult alike to begin on their steps to learning with confidence, freedom of expression and individuality. Essentially this project encourages the children to play and to explore their creativity. They voluntarily bring stories to trained early years workers who transcribe exactly (without coaxing) their words. Stories are gathered over the course of a morning. The children then gather around a storyacting area, where stories are read and enacted by the group. 2007 Dragonfly For 8 weeks in Spring 2007 TAG delivered Dragonfly for Laighstonehall Nursery in Hamilton. In Autumn 2008, TAG returned to Hamilton to deliver Dragonfly with a new twist. This time we trained p6 and p7 pupils to take stories from p1s. Both of these projects were funded by South Lanarkshire Council. ![]() MAKE BELIEVE (Dragonfly in East Renfrewshire) TAG is working in partnership with East-Renfrewshire Council to deliver Make Believe. A pilot project with Arthurlie Nursery ran for eight weeks over two mornings a week, from Sept-Nov 2006. Following this successful pilot, TAG is now working on a two year collaboration to roll this project out to every nursery school in the local authority. TAG will be working with around 2-3 nurseries each term until June 2008. The aim is that every pre-school pupil in East Renfrewshire will have experienced the project and every member of nursery staff will be trained to deliver it themselves in the future. ![]() "There could be no curriculum any of us could develop that would teach essential human emotion, empathy, essential to all of our civilised societies, the emotion without which nothing we ever do toward a more peaceful world would ever work. And there it is, demonstrated, giving us optimistic understanding: Yes it's there. It's worth pursuing. Its worth working for , because we see in this involving play and story, that its there. Furthermore the children see it." Vivian Paley on Story and play (from 'The Original Learning Tools') For further information on this project please email Angela Smith here.
