The Crucible by Arthur Miller
April - May 2006

A large scale co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland.

"this is storytelling at its best"

The Herald (**** 4 stars)

ABOUT THE PLAY

A masterpiece of the twentieth century by Arthur Miller, "the greatest American dramatist of our age", The Crucible is an intense and timeless work inspired by the 1692 witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts.

A riveting drama of one man's conscience set against a community consumed by hysteria, The Crucible puts truth on trial as the actions of a group of young girls fuel a lethal climate of fear and intolerance. At its heart lies a man's fundamental battle to retain his identity.

A GROUND-BREAKING COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

"This is a play that shows how finger-pointing hysteria can grip every layer of society, and it makes sense to have such a broad cross-section on stage".
The Guardian

This NTS/TAG co-production of The Crucible combined the talents of both professional and local community actors. This ambitious project saw TAG's nine strong professional cast work alongside a different community cast in each of the five tour venues.

Led by the NTS Learn teams our five regional community casts rehearsed part time for a number of months. Guy Hollands (Director) rehearsed the professional cast for five weeks in Glasgow; ably assisted by a dedicated company of Glasgow community actors without whom this process would not have been possible. Gordon Barr (Assistant Director) fulfilled the vital role of ensuring that the local community companies were kept in touch with the rehearsal process in Glasgow.

At the start of each performance week the nine professionals began rehearsing with the local community company at this venue. The final production was therefore the culmination of months of hard work by a huge range of people.

THE CRUCIBLE YAHOO GROUP...
One of our community cast members created an unofficial Crucible Yahoo group for all of those who were involved.  Click here to find out more.

"This TAG Theatre masterpiece co-production of Arthur Miller's masterpiece is aimed at those aged 12 and over, and my teenager was enthralled...It is a luxury to see a company of 23 at all and a real achievement that the non-professionals are so strong that the distinction between the two is meaningless".
