"The YOUNG Co. started in 2005 and has been growing and expanding ever since. New people are always welcome and it's good to have changes as we learn more from different people. The YOUNG Co. are always given opportunities to express their ideas and opinions on shows." "The Citizens YOUNG Co. is a group of young people aged between 16-21. We attend weekly meetings on a Monday night and perform shows in the Citizens' Theatre at Easter and Autumn." "Unlike most other theatre groups available to young people, the Citz YOUNG Co. is not just a summer school. All year long there are projects and workshops to take part in and the experience is always welcoming and encouraging." ![]() MEMBERS "Not one member of the company is alike and because of this, we are able to represent our city as a whole and produce pieces of theatre that we can all identify with whilst discovering new things about each other at the same time." "I have made friends with people I would never have met in any other situation; people with such a vast array of skills, talents and interests as well as social, cultural and religious backgrounds." "In the YOUNG Co. it has never mattered what school you go to, what kind of music you listen to, what football team you support or any of those things that define us in modern youth culture." ![]() STARTING OUT "as we trundled into the room I began to mingle like a single person at a party. I learned some names, some ages, some college courses and I began to feel good about coming integrating myself with a new circle of friends." ![]() FRIENDS "I count each member of the company as a friend and value them as individuals. And such is the nature of the company that I see the professionals that we work with as friends too. Working as equals makes the exchange of ideas a wonderfully liberating and empowering experience." "Everyone in the group is friendly and I love every moment I spend with them. We meet every Monday and I cannot wait till the meeting. The environment in there is so relaxing and very welcoming." ![]() THE PRODUCTIONS "The shows we perform are always different and this allows us to get experience in all areas. We perform to a paying audience and different guests within the industry. The press come in and do a review on what we are doing which is good as this gives us encouragement. We get to work with different established Directors and this gives us variety and enables us to see how they each stage things." "Chicago Project: it was my very first public stage appearance, I'd never done acting before and I was very nervous, as you do, but people around me kept giving me courage and believed in me then I said to myself maybe I can do it and I did. I was on stage acting, sweat was dribbling down to my eye from my forehead but I had to do it for the people who believed in me and gave me courage...hopefully I'll stay with YOUNG Co. til the end." ![]() BEING CITIZENS "The Citizens' YOUNG Co. are treated with the same respect as everyone else in the Theatre. There are no "Stars" we are a team, from the tea makers to the Top Dogs we are all equal." "No-one is looked down upon because of their suggestions or mocked for their opinions. You are encouraged to discuss and knowing that you have influence over what you produce makes the final piece all the more important and significant to you as an individual." WHY COME? "In my own life what the Citizens' YOUNG Company has given me is chances, experience, memories and above all lifelong friends." Citizens' YOUNG Co. photos by Iain G. Farrell |
