COMPANY HISTORY
TAG Theatre Company was established in 1967. TAG is actually Scotland's oldest touring theatre company, although ironically its work is aimed at the country's youngest citizens. TAG was originally developed as the outreach arm of the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow, and was known as the Citizens' Theatre for Youth. The company changed its name in the 1970s and became Theatre About Glasgow (TAG). For many years now, the company has simply been known as TAG, as its work is spread throughout Scotland; not just Glasgow. In Spring 2006 the company returned to its roots, and moved back into the Citizens' Theatre in preparation for a full reintegration from April 2007. The companies have always shared the same Board of Directors.
From April 2007 TAG and the Citizens' work together as one united company to create an unrivalled range of work, in Scotland, emanting from the one building. Together we provide high quality main house theatre and studio productions, touring theatre for children & young people, a YOUNG Co., community company and a diverse range of education and outreach work.
TAG's original Artistic Director was Christine Redington, who was at the helm for three years until 1971. Since then a number of high-profile directors have worked for the company, including Ian Wooldridge (1978-1984), Ian Brown (1984-1988) who went to West Yorkshire Playhouse, Alan Lyddiard, who went to Newcastle Playhouse/Northern Stage (1988-1992), and Tony Graham, now at the Unicorn Theatre in London (1992-1997). James Brining was with TAG from 1997-2003, before taking up post as Artistic Director at Dundee Rep Theatre. After a brief period under the direction of Emily Gray (previously Associate Director at The Unicorn Theatre in London), Guy Hollands took up post in February 2004. Guy joined the company from his positions as Freelance Director and Gorbals Drama Worker at the Citizens' Theatre, TAG is now looking forward to a vibrant future alongside the Citizens' Theatre.
We've also had a number of high-profile actors work for the company, including Robert Carlyle, Bill Paterson, Alex Norton, Alan Cumming, Blythe Duff, Forbes Masson, Caroline Paterson and Billy Boyd.
